We specialise in growing Spanish and Portuguese varieties on a small, family-run vineyard in the Geographe Region, near Donnybrook, 200km south of Perth.
In 2002, we planted six red grape varieties - Bastardo, Graciano, Tempranillo, Tinta Cão, Touriga Nacional, and Sousão. From these we produce five straight varietal wines and one blend of five varieties called Cinque.
This is the only planting of its kind in the Geographe Region. Since our first vintage in 2004 we have been fortunate to attract some of West Australia's top wine makers. Impressed by working with our beautiful fruit many have gone on to incorporate these varieties into their own vineyards and winemaking.
The Mazza vineyard has ten acres of carefully managed vines that receive lots of attention. Everything is done by hand - pruning, shoot thinning, fruit thinning, leaf plucking and fruit picking. The vines receive minimal irrigation through summer when necessary. We live in our vineyard and swim in our dam and manage our vines so that sprays are used very sparingly.
Our plantings have been inspired by our travels through Spain and Portugal and the fantastic wines of Rioja and the Douro Valley. We are proud to produce an Australian translation of these Old World heritage varieties and believe we are the only Australian vineyard to present this collection from a single site. We look forward to planting other interesting grapes in the not too distant future.
